Save Brisrol Bay Event
Oct 19th, 2011, 11:19am
As most of you know, Bristol Bay, Alaska is home to the most productive wild salmon breeding grounds in the world. It is also home to massive deposits of gold, copper and molybdenum; you get the picture. If the Pebble Mine is built it will propose a high risk to the area. In the mines lifetime it can produce up to 10 billion pounds of waste; that's nearly enough to bury a city the size of Seattle. While the mining industry claims it can contain this waste those opposed to the mine say it would be an environmental disaster waiting to happen. The $500 billion dollar commercial and sport Salmon fishing industry created by Bristol Bay and the eight major rivers that feed it, employs over 13,000 workers.
The Save Bristol Bay organization is supported by many industries and environmental groups including: commercial fishing, sport fishing (both fly and gear) and the food industry. This month the "Save Bristol Bay Road Show" will be putting on events in several cities, including San Francisco. There will be a showing of the award winning  documentary "Red Gold" about the Sockeye Salmon. There will be speakers, outdoor gear raffles and food (including Sockeye Salmon) prepared by chefs. Admission is free but you need to R.S.V.P.
