Flyfishing Academy - 2005


The Santa Barbara Flyfishers selected twelve students from applications that were submitted, ages 10 to 15 years, to attend a Flyfishing Academy sponsored by the Club. Attendees were introduced to the sport of flyfishing and learned about terminology and tackle, entomology, fly tying, casting and presentation techniques. Club members served as instructors. The program was a two day (one weekend) curriculum, and took place on:

June 25th Saturday - 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM
June 26th Sunday - 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
(Lunch was provided both days)

At Hendry's Beach at the Community Environmental Council's South Coast Watershed Resource Center

Curriculum included:
  • Fly Tying
  • Fishing Terminology
  • Fighting Fish to Keep or Release
  • Fish Biology, Ecology & Entomology (Bugs!)
  • Fly Casting
  • Reading Water
  • Knot Tying
  • Safety & Etiquette

Special guest instructor - Neal Taylor
Author and seven time National Fly Casting Champion.

Presented to each graduating participant:
  • Free membership in Santa Barbara Flyfishers for 1 year
  • Redington Red.Fly Rod and Reel combo!!! *
  • Neal Taylor's Fly Fishing Book
  • Graduation Certificate
  • Invitation to future outing
