Saltwater Flies and Materials to Create Them...
Jan 14th, 2009, 6:18pm

Hello Folks,

I am new to saltwater fly fishing and am interested in tying my own saltwater flies. Specifically, the mole crab.

Can anybody recommend a list of materials they use, instruction to a pattern they have tied, and a place to either purchase these items in one visit or in one online transaction?

I have had difficulty matching up the proper threads, brand hooks, etc. to one provider. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!- Dunes

Dunes,

Start with watching videos on YouTube.  At the search bar type in:  Fly tying crab pattern, shrimp pattern, clouser pattern, merkin..............etc.

Then stop in at Erics Artful Angler at Santa Clause Lane and he can get you set up with a few basic things to tie up saltwater flies.

Dunes,

I see you are in Santa Maria.  Go to Hole in the Wall in SLO.  He ties great salt water flies and he has a lot of stuff you can use for making salt flies.

Lingcod,
Thanks for the inf0. I went by Hole-in-the-Wall and find out they no longer have a storefront. Apparently, the owner is running the store out of his home. I am going to give him a call and make an appointment to see what materials he can set me up. One of these days I am going to head down to the Artful Angler to check out the store.

Thanks for the youtube hints, I will check out the videos.

By the way, I went to the Upper Kern this past weekend. Two Bows only,  a 12 incher and a 4 incher.

Cheers,

D,

Thanks for the information on the Kern.

I was hoping this rain would get the Santa Ynez and the Kern pumping so the fish would start moving up from the lakes.

So far it is not too promising.
