Fished the Sand Spit Today
Feb 2nd, 2008, 11:20pm

Surf and Sea Fisherman,

I fished the Sand Spit today with John Jostes and Lew Riffle.  At noon the wind was coming down from the north and we could manage the waves.

There was a lot of kelp in the water.  Low tide was around 2 pm.  Lew caught one perch and I caught one perch.  That is my first salt water fish for 2008.

Later in the afternoon the wind turned and came in from the south-east.  The wind chop started with bigger waves following.  By 4pm it was a fight with the kelp, the waves, and strong winds.

All in all it was a good day.  We did not get skunked and the weather was manageable until the end of the day.

Better than a stick on the end of your line...it will just get better!   LEW

Lew,

Remind me of the name of the running line you are using.

I went up to the Santa Ynez today.  Windy and cold.  There is snow on Little Pine Mt. I practiced casting into, around, and with the wind.  I found the best combo was a Roll Cast, a fast pick up, and one big blast with a double haul.  No fish. Muddy water. Tough wading. Cold.

I think it will be nice up there by next weekend.

Hope to see you on the water soon.

Joseph

The line is Suffix Elite 30lb Hi Vis Yellow  with a dia of .022". The Dan Blanton Page has a lot of posts about this line if you want to hear more than it takes a little getting used to, is better than amnesia, and will put 10' more feet onto your shooting cast. The longer your cast the longer your line is in the water fishing.     LEW

Lew,

Thank you for the inf0.

I love your Zen mind: "The longer your cast the longer your line is in the water fishing".

I am going to use that for my message icon, with acknowledgment of the master's quote, of course.

What are your plans this week end, (for fishing)?

Plans? Ask the fish, consult the tides, and find a hole with big perch in it.   LEW

Lew,

I am going up to the river this AM.  Plan to be back early afternoon.

Low tide is around 5 pm today.

I will give you a call when I get down from the mountain.

I heard there were lots of fly fishers on the river yesterday.
