DFG votes to close Surf beach to fishing
Aug 19th, 2006, 3:13pm

The SB news Press reports: “Voting late Tuesday in Monterey, the commission chose a plan that would ban fishing in 94 square miles of state waters from Point Conception to A0x96o Nuevo, a point north of Monterey. State waters extend three miles from shore.

Among the proposed no-fishing zones is a 33-square-mile stretch off Vandenberg Air Force Base, between Purisima Point and Point Arguello. More than half of this area is already off-limits to most kinds of fishing.”

I see in the SB News Press, that a final vote will not happen until Feb. There will be additional public hearings, so it’s not over yet. For all you south of here the News Press reports, “The commission is expected to take a final vote in February and may then turn it’s attention to Southern California including the Gaviota Coast and South Coast of Santa Barbara County”.

The FDG Commission meets in Santa Barbara at the Museum of Natural History on Aug. 24-25.  The agenda primarily addresses waterfowl hunting regulations.  However, a paragraph in the agenda states that input on any topic may be brought up, but will not be discussed if not pertaining to the agenda.  Perhaps an opportunity for direct input to the Commission on ocean fishing closures before Feb. 2007.

Log into DFG's home page (www.dfg.ca.gov) and navigate through calendar, Aug 24-25 and agenda.

There is public input on each sessions agenda usually at the begining on Thursday. You can Email the executive director of the commision ahead of time with your request to address the commmison on a public comment basis or just get there ahead of time on get on the agenda.

Warren it would be great if you were able to do this since you are a flyfisher that lives in the area and uses Surf Beach.      LEW
