Public land in jeopardy!
Nov 17th, 2005, 2:05pm

House Reconciliation Bill (HR 4241) will soon go before the US House of Representatives. Harmful provisions were buried within the bill by Congressman Richard Pombo of California. This is same congressman that favors changing the Endangered Species Act. His provision in this bill would allow the sale of public land to private parties. If this bill passes mining companies and other development interests can privatize public land without any review or federal oversight for a mere $1000 per acre. His provision has nothing to do with the rest of this bill; it is a sneaky attempt to get one by us!

More than half of the nations blue ribbon trout streams are on public land. Much of it is important habitat for endangered species. Public land is held in trust for fisherman, hunters, outdoor sports participants and all citizens by Congressional mandate. Pombo wants to change that!

Please express your views on this important matter. Send e-mail and, even more important, send a letter. It's very easy to bury or ignore e-mail but a paper letter delivered by the post office is more effective. DO both.

Santa Barbara is California's 23rd district and is represented by The Honorable Lois Capps

This is a scarey proposal.  I just can't imagine this getting very far if we keep squeaking about it.

Scary it is Lew!

So far the amendment proposed by Representative Tom Udall of New Mexico to remove the "Trojan Horse" from the budget bill was rejected by the committee.

This is the time of the year when Congress wants to get things finished so things get pushed through and along with the seemingly boring and harmless bills these sleazy added parts go through with them.

This dangerous legislation has now passed the House and will go before the House-Senate committee. The senate version does not have the hidden addition. It is important that the dangerous part added by Pombo be removed before the bill is passed by the Senate.

Here's some more information:
