Title: Mark visits the Kern, plus Kern reports
Post by Forum Admin on Aug 8th, 2011, 12:21pm

I have been back in Kernville for a couple weeks after spending several weeks down south but I haven't had a chance to post fish pics. The river has been fishing great and with the great flows it's going to stay that way. Since I've been back the flows have been up to well over 2,000 and stained to today's 1200 and crystal clear. The fishing has been good through the whole range and, at times, incredible! These good flows this late in the summer are a real boon to the fishery. Cool water with lots of oxygen mean a healthy fishery with strong fighting fish. As the flows come down it will mean less easy fishing standing in shallow water near the shore and more wading to get to parts of the river where fish have scattered. Be careful on those slippery Kern River rocks and those "trip boulders" the river has carefully placed to cool you off; not that I've ever tripped over one and fell face first into the river!

Mark Johnson, came up to visit and we did some tubin' in the lake which produced some nice trout:

And even a surprise carp that took one of Mark's special zonkers while he was stripin' for trout:

The lower river has been fishing good too:

The upper river has been incredible. Evening hatches have not only produced a lot of trout and some really big Pike Minnow:

(Still looking for those pictures, will post when I find them)

I've caught a lot of quality trout:

And some quality big boys:

Those big ones are different fish, all caught Sunday evening, as you can see in the last one it's getting dark.
