Title: Kern report
Post by Forum Admin on May 13th, 2010, 7:25pm

Spent some time up at the Kern this month and had some good fishing. The weather was strange. It couldn't decide to be winter spring or summer. It would get hot and the river flows would come up; it would get cold, even snow up high, and the flows would come down. In between the changes I would find some decent weather and fish in between.

The river in May at over 2400 cfs and rising.

Still fishable and holding a lot of fish. I didn't take any pictures of the trout I caught. There were plenty but all the ones I caught were on the small side.

I did get down to the lake a few times, which is coming up very fast, in the rare moments when the wind wasn't blowing at gale force. The carp are plentiful! I caught 6 one morning and 3 the next morning.

Most were about this size but I did hook a few big ones that decided to take my 5X tippet through the trees. The lake is filling up fast and the place I took the above picture is now under several feet of water. New flats are being created every day and the carp are movin' in.

The lake also is producing some crappie.
