Title: Judge rules to starve our National symbol?
Post by Forum Admin on Apr 9th, 2010, 1:52pm

Although the Bald Eagle, our National Symbol, is no longer on the Endangered Species List it is still protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

In a recent court decision regarding the lawsuit against the California Department of Fish and Game a decision was made to halt stocking of hatchery Rainbow Trout in waters that are part of or flow into Endangered Steelhead waters. This resulted in the halting of stocking in Lake Cachuma here in Santa Barbara County by the State. Lake Cachuma was created by a dam on the Santa Ynez River, once a famous Steelhead fishery. Of course, the County of Santa Barbara stocked anyway but that's a whole different story.

Lake Cachuma is a favorite winter home from November to March for Bald Eagles. One of the reasons for their (the Eagles) fondness of Lake Cachuma is the abundance of Rainbow Trout, one of their favorite foods, planted by the DFG. The County even runs "Eagle Cruises" for the tourists.

Anyway, here's my thoughts:

  • Is not the Bald Eagle our National Symbol and a protected species?
  • Hasn't it's presence at the Lake spawned a tourist attraction for the County?
  • What will the Eagle do if it's food supply is cut?
  • Will they starve or just move on?
  • What will happen to the Eagle Cruise if there are no more Eagles?
  • Could a "Coot Cruise" replace it?
  • Can renewed stocking save the day?
  • Did someone do an Environmental Impact Study?
  • Can somebody be sued here, for the sake of the Eagle ... or the County ... or the Coots .. ?

So many questions ... so few (real) answers!   ::)
