Title: Ruin the fishery and bankrupt the State!
Post by Forum Admin on Oct 31st, 2009, 12:45pm

It's amazing what people will do for water. All they care about is stealing from the Delta and the rivers for the profit of developers and agribusiness while making the taxpayers of a broke State pay for it.  Keep in mind the legislature may vote on this Monday! >:(

Legislature to Vote On Controversial Water Bills on Monday

Email Your Assemblymember and Senator To Save California Rivers!

Controversial Delta water policy and water bond bills have proliferated over the last week in the California Legislature like brain-eating zombies. As of Friday, October 30, there were no less than 20 water bills introduced and few of them are any good for California rivers. Many of the new bills are over 100 pages long and the Legislature is expected to vote on them by Monday, Nov. 2!

Leading the pack of scary Halloween-weekend bills is Senator Darrell Steinberg’s SB4, a bill that purports to solve California’s supposed water crisis. Friends of the River is concerned that the bill will result in the fast-track approval of a large Peripheral Canal capable of diverting fresh water from the Sacramento River around the Delta for export to corporate agribusiness in the southern Central Valley and urban developers in southern California. The bill would also encourage the construction of new or enlarged dams that would harm the Sacramento, San Joaquin, Mokelumne, and Bear Rivers.

To pay for the new or enlarged dams, and to restore some of the damage to the Delta ecosystem caused by fresh water exports, at least three budget-busting water bond bills have been introduced for a possible vote on Monday. These include SB2 by Senator Steinberg (D-Sacramento), SB3 by Senator Dave Cogdill (R-Fresno), and AB14 by Assemblymember Anna Caballero (D-Salinas). The bond bills range from $9 billion to nearly $11 billion. Regardless of the amount, the new water bonds will bankrupt California. Both the State Treasurer and the Legislative Analyst have warned legislators that too much of California’s general fund revenues are going to pay existing bond debt. We simply cannot afford to borrow more money to build costly water projects that only benefit a few.

One decent bill introduced this past week is AB13 by Assemblymember Alyson Huber (D-Lodi) and Senator Lois Wolk (D-Linden). This simple bill prohibits the Peripheral Canal unless it is expressly authorized by the Legislature. This bill prevents the Legislature from avoiding a clear vote on the controversial canal and will make them accountable to the voters.

Please take action this weekend by sending emails to your Assemblymember and Senator urging them to vote “No” on the bad Delta water policy and water bond bills and “Aye” on AB 13!
