Title: Spring has sprung!
Post by Dunes on Mar 21st, 2009, 8:05am

Hello Folks,

Spring has officially arrived. What is going on the Santa Ynez? I haven't seen many post. Either that means you all are   fishing so much you don't have time to post or there is zero to no activity.

Though I have been enjoying my time out on the salt, I am really looking forward to getting out on the Freshwater. Any suggestions that are shorter than the trek to Kern!

Cheers,

Dunes

The Santa Ynez is fishable now but the stockings have been light and it's not a big attraction right now, the salt is fishing better.

The Kern is your best bet, and shortest trek, for some decent trout fishing.

I was up at the SY on Sunday. The wind made things slightly difficult, it was strong enough to prevent decent drifts in the trouty water (I swear the the current was running upstream ;)), and made sight fishing for carp difficult due to chop on the surface. I managed to spook a few carp though and didn't see or feel any trout.

I've not been up. Too busy working on the boat project. Thanks for the update Ryan.

I saw on the DFG stocking website that Lion Canyon Creek was also stocked... Has anyone fished that recently? or in past years? Any tips?

I'd like to figure out if its worth stopping by because I'd bet the pressure from bait guys is a lot less over there than at the Santa Ynez.

Hey Folks,

Where exactly is Lion Canyon Creek? Is it the creek on the way up to Davey Brown and Nira? If so, where is the best location to fish, is it near the picnic grounds, adjacent to the road?

Thanks,

Dunes

The Santa Ynez is fishing really good right now.  ;)

Lion Canyon Creek is on the way to Davy Brown, is very small and is stocked where the road crosses.

I was at the santa ynez this past thursday, the 26th. there were fish everywhere!!
we spent most of the day in the pool next to the 3rd or 4th crossing (can't remember)

3-4 flyfishermen came and fished next to us...
I was the guy with the ultra light spinning gear....
I had my 6wt in the car....I was just a little too embarrassed to bring it out in front of experienced fly fishermen  :-[

I need to practice my fly casting!

You should have said hello!  ;D

One of those fly fisherman is probably the best casting instructor you'll ever find. He's a Master Certified Instructor. Any one of us would have helped you. Next time, be sure and introduce yourself and get your fly rod out!  :)

I had a feeling that they(you) were forum members....

well, my name's omar.....hopefully I can get back out on the river...I was home on spring break, now i'm back to reading :-/

so, which one was the Master Certified Instructor, and which one was you?

The shortest one was the Master. I have a beard. One of the other is a guide, local and Montana, and the fourth was a friend of his.
